Let Us Welcome This New Year
Article by Damien Flemming
Many people see New Year as the second opportunity to start afresh and another chance to make Year resolutions. Is time for realistic yearly goal-setting? Is time to make an unbreakable promise to oneself?
Let’s take phone New Year resolution statistics. 40 to 45% of American adult make a number of resolutions each year. It’s seen that 75% resolutions are kept past the first week, 71% past the second week, 64% past 30 days and 46% past Six months. (Source: Journal of Clinical Psychology, Volume 58, Issue 4, 2002.) The 4 most popular Year resolution topics are based on self-improvement or education, weight, money and relationships. People have seen this time around of the year as the time to get into good habits and practices ranging from practicing vegetarianism, eliminating wicked temptations of junk food, improving fitness levels or embarking on a dream journey.
Like all other goals, Year resolutions should be specific, have measurable landmarks, along with a solid deadline. It should be made very Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time based (SMART Goals). For instance, if your resolution is to lose weight, you should are designed for an authentic degree of weight reduction. Aiming excessive might provide discouragement and can scare you within the beginning. Breakdown of the final goal into short term goals and tracking progress will help you stay motivated. When the goal is well attainable and realistic, it won’t allow the enthusiasm and also the hope die out after a couple of weeks. Sharing your resolution with your family and friends can help provide support that will help you result in the change and attain the goal. Goals ought to be made fun and rewarding having a “Carrot, not Stick” approach. After accomplishing the short term goal, reward yourself using what you like probably the most. (Of course not a box of chocolates to lose weight but something that does not contradict together with your goal). This could boost the possibility of success, hence won’t let you feel responsible for breaking your promise to yourself and also at the same time frame this will honor your commitment to change. Experts say it takes approximately A 3 week period for a new activity, such as exercising, to become a habit, and 6 months for this to become part of your personality.
Not only adults but also kids might have Year resolutions. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) had released healthy New Year resolution ideas for kids of various age groups. For example, preschoolers might be helped to have resolutions like cleaning up their toys, brushing teeth twice daily and washing their hands. For kids 5-12 years old these are extended into testing out new sport or activity, wearing helmet while biking, wearing sunscreen prior to going in the sun’s rays, being friendly along with other kids and never to release personal information on the Internet. Teenager’s New Year resolutions vary from proper nutrition to using mobile phones e.g. they will not use cell phones and text while driving, they will choose non-violent TV shows and video games and will treat other people with respect.
It is seen that despite the fact that a lot of people who make Year resolutions do break them, but resolutions are helpful. Some might believe that making confident choices everyday on what really matters for you is more important than Year resolutions. People who make resolutions are Ten times more prone to attain their goals than individuals who don’t make resolutions. It’s good to look forward to what we want and accomplish this, but we must spend time reflecting and become thankful to what we now have attained in the past year.

US Sports question by Patrick B: Which US sports have the highest attendance?
I’m looking for attendance figures, not television or radio ratings, not opinions, on minor and college sports teams and other sports, e.g. horseracing. So, I’m specifically looking for hard numbers. Here is an example of a site for minor league hockey attendance that could answer the question for hockey: http://www.mib.org/~lennier/hockey/att.cgi
