Basketball Team conducts free basketball clinic at USAG Brussels
BRUSSELS, Belgium – News Release Basketball conducted a free basketball clinic for 24 kids at the U.S. Army Garrison Brussels Community Fitness Center, Sterrebeek Annex Aug. 9-12.
News Release Basketball is a team of American male and female collegiate basketball players that has toured Europe since 1973. In addition to providing free basketball clinics for youth ages 10 to 18, they are a Christian ministry. This is their second-consecutive clinic at Brussels.
USAG Brussels Child, Youth and School Services and Club Beyond, from the Brussels Chapel partnered to bring the team here.
The News Release team that visited Brussels is composed of nine current and former female basketball players from colleges in California, North Dakota, Missouri, Colorado and more, according to Cheryl Fielitz-Scarborough, who led the clinic. There was also one player from the Men’s Team.
"All of them love basketball," Fielitz-Scarborough said. "They help the kids improve their skills and they talk about ethics and character too. We also use basketball as a tool to share the Gospel."
Fielitz-Scarborough is the Associate Director and Women’s Team Director of News Release. She played basketball at Malone College in Canton, Ohio and has coached college basketball for 18 years.
In addition to running the basketball clinics, News Release plays games against local club teams, Fielitz-Scarborough said. They recently played two games in Germany and two in Belgium.
During the Brussels clinic News Release ran several drills and practices designed to teach the kids new skills and sharpen those they already have whether in ball handling, passing or shooting.
Raquel Crepeau participated in this year’s camp and enjoyed it.
"It was good especially for kids who want to play basketball and get better," Crepeau said. "The college players were really nice. They taught more than just the basics; when we made a mistake showed us how to improve."
One of the News Release players who taught in the clinic, Randi Henderson, is a 2010 graduate Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo. She played on the women’s varsity basketball team there.
Henderson said she has coached basketball since she was a sophomore in high school. This is her first time coaching with News Release and she’s loved it.
"It’s amazing, we get to reach out to kids in ways we wouldn’t be able to in the States," Henderson said.
Henderson said she definitely wants to coach with News Release again.
"This has been a life-changing experience, it’s happiness," Henderson said. "You’ll always remember how happy you made the kids and how happy you are in return."

Is Toronto Raptors’ Chris Bosh a deadbeat dad?
Toronto Raptors’ star Chris Bosh is not bothered by news reports depicting him as a ‘deadbeat dad’ in reference to his child support case filed by his former live-in partner.
Chris Bosh sunk in 16 points and made 13 rebounds as his team beat the L.A. Clippers 100-76 Sunday.
The Toronto Raptors’ newest superstar outscored Jose Calderon and Shawn Marion to snap a two-game losing streak.
Yahoo news reports:
The Raptors recorded the lopsided victory without starting centre Andrea Bargnani. The 23-year-old had his consecutive games played streak end at 130 because of a sore left heal. It was the first game the seven-footer has missed since Dec. 9, 2007 against the Houston Rockets.
Toronto got off to a hot start thanks to an 11-point run midway through the first quarter – capped by a mid-range jump shot from Marion to give the Raptors a 22-11 lead in front of a crowd of 17,610. Bosh recorded eight points and four rebounds while Calderon added seven points in the quarter.
Allison Mathis, describing herself as Chris Bosh former live-in girlfriend said she is seeking child support and custody of an infant she claims to be Bosh’ daughter. The court case has been filed in Maryland.
The Toronto Raptors’ power forward has been called a ‘deadbeat dad’ who left his girlfriend when she was seven month pregnant.
‘All I can say is I’m going to take care of my responsibilities like I’ve doing in the past and in the future and keep respect for everyone, he told reporters.
Chris Bosh is a young professional American basketball player in the NBA who is playing for the Toronto Raptors. He was born in Dallas, Texas on March 24, 1984. He studied at Lincoln High School in Dallas, Texas and in college at Georgia Tech.
Bosh, who started his career in 2003, has received various awards from NBA among them, 4x NBA All Star, 2003 NBA All Rookie Team, and 2006 Al-NBA second team.
